Working
as a volunteer with young people can be demanding and
challenging, but very rewarding and fun. Volunteers need
to be able to relate well to young people and people who are
looking for a career as youth workers or social workers often
get involved in volunteering to gain the experience they need
for further training and employment. Many youth clubs or
groups involve volunteer helpers and as most youth groups run in
the evenings, this could suit volunteers who work during the
day. Some youth groups also offer specific activities such
as personal development programmes for young people, internet
cafes or activities for young people with special needs.
Other
organisations run programmes to support young people who face
difficulties and volunteers can help with carers' projects,
befriending and mentoring schemes, literacy and life-skills
programmes.
